Usually yes, at least a one-step. A coating is transparent and seals in whatever is underneath it — including swirls. Skipping correction locks the existing defects under a product warrantied for several years, which is why most reputable Charlotte shops quote the two together.
For washing, interior work, and most protection, yes — professional mobile units are fully self-contained. The exception is multi-stage paint correction and long-term ceramic coatings, which benefit from controlled lighting, temperature, and a dust-free space. Many pros offer both.
